Black Lives Matter Murals Throughout Downtown  Raleigh!

After the death of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police, many people saw the injustice that had occurred and some people are slowly coming to terms with the systemic racism that persists throughout so many institutions throughout the United States. Thousands of people took to the streets in peaceful protests to raise awareness of the injustices and try to make change with their voice. As night fell, many protests turned into riots and looting in cities across the United States. The same thing happened here in Raleigh and as businesses were cleaning up the next day and boarding up their businesses, many local business owners hired local artists to create personal pieces of work representing black lives and how black lives matter, the importance of having your voice heard at the voting booth and expressing the desire for justice and equal protection under the law. The artistic expression that has now been shown throughout downtown Raleigh is inspiring to see.

Black Lives Matter

As these protests were occurring throughout the country in the wake of the death of George Floyd, the City of Raleigh gave permission for local artists to paint the mural “End Racism Now” along West Martin Street in downtown Raleigh, between the Contemporary Art Museum and The Dillon. You can easily take the elevator up to the 9th floor and from an open terrace you can look down and see this large mural painted in yellow letters similar to the “Black Lives Matter” mural in Washington DC that was painted on the street leading up to the White House.

End Racism Now

We must end racism and be anti racist! So many people think we ended racism during the civil rights movement, but that’s not true. We still have a lot of systemic racism built into so many of society’s institutions. We have a lot of work to do to turn these injustices around. If you are white, it’s imperative you have conversations with other white people! They might be difficult conversations to have, especially if the other person has a different viewpoint, but we all have to do something. Whether it’s a face to face conversation or just on social media, dialogue must continue to occur. Everybody needs to vote for candidates that will help change laws that will help benefit everyone and not just a select few. We need politicians to help change laws so there can be true equality because Black Lives Matter.
