Rome is a city in upstate New York, located in the central part of the state off of Interstate 90. We made this our second stop after Niagara Falls, along our road trip to the North East as this was the hometown of a college friend. I enjoyed spending time in Rome and getting to explore this part of New York State. There are multiple activities and things to explore around Rome, but I have narrowed them down to the following three.
Hike the Adirondack Mountains
Rome is a great starting point to explore parts of the Adirondack Mountains, the beautiful mountainous area of upstate New York! Adirondack, actually means porcupine in the Native American language of Mohawk and became the Champlain-Adirondack Biosphere Reserve, named by UNESCO. There are multiple hiking trails to explore. You can get away from the real world by becoming one with nature while relaxing in the woods. Hike to the summit of a trail, breath in the fresh air, take in the view and soak up the sun. You will be happy you took the time to get out into nature and explore your surroundings.

Visit Fort Stanwix
I bet you didn’t know there was a fort in Rome, because I sure didn’t. I never even imagined it. This colonial fort was first started in 1758, to help secure the line of colonial expansion into Native American territories, but wasn’t completed until 1762. If you could view the fort from above, you would see that it is shaped in the form of a star. The fort burned down in May of 1781 and besides not being rebuilt, it was also abandoned. Then in 1935, the fort was designated a National Monument and finally between 1974 and 1978, the National Park Service reconstructed the fort, which is now open year round and operated by the National Park Service.
Gamble at the Turning Stone Casino and Resort
Rome is located in Oneida County, which gets its name from the Oneida Indian Nation. This land is owned by their tribe so they have built a huge resort and casino on these Native American lands and called it the Turning Stone Resort Casino. Besides having the standard Casino with the multitude of slot machines and card tables, they also have their own theater, along with restaurants and even their own golf course.
Rome is a great place to visit and makes for a wonderful stopping point along any type of road trip! Make sure to check out a few of the other Treasures Of Traveling we stopped along on our road trip through the north east including Niagara Falls, Portland, Maine and Acadia National Park.
